Sunday Market Cafe
NEW CAFE IN THE HOODS
SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2014
Lately there have been many new cafes popping up and one of the latest additions is Sunday Market, good news for people living near the Kovan/Serangoon area. Located right in the corner of Lim Tua Tow road (yes, we were really amused by the road name, it means Big Head/Boss in Hokkien), you can easily spot it once you turn into the road, well just open your eyes wide enough and I'm sure you wouldn't miss it.
“brunch could possibly be the most important meal of your day.”
It's our first time here, oh in fact the boy was the one who told me about this new cafe! I chanced upon it under "new cafes to go to" while doing my research as well. So since it was a Sunday, well, going to Sunday Market was like a why not! We headed down for a rather late brunch after serving at church's kids ministry in the morning and I'm glad it didn't disappoint us like some other cafes we been to previously.
It certainly wasn't my type of girly whimsical cafe but I was particularly drawn to its old-school vintage atmosphere made up of brick walls and those interesting vines hanging on the wall at the entrance. Felt like we were dining in a part of nature.
The Menu's quite limited (pretty common for a startup) but a rather good selection consisting of your favourite all-day breakfasts, snacks and starters, main courses and of course desserts!
It's funny but I am in love with their pineapple juice! It's so good I finished it all (almost at a go) considering the fact that I always cannot finish my drinks, woah this says alot about how good it was. Maybe it's just me, but still! Well, and in future I would actually not mind coming back to Sunday Market just for their pineapple juice. I'm weird this way, but it was very very refreshing for me, especially on a sunny sunny Sunday.
Remember to check out their menu online (alternatively, click here!) before heading down! (:
roasted duck with garlic hoisin crispy eggs|$12.90
This dish made up of shredded duckmeat in two pancakes topped with hoisin sauce immediately reminded me of my favourite Skinny Duck Pizza from Timbre/Switch. I guess it's because of the same type of sauce used. I must say with a little Asian fusion added, it's a unique dish to order at these Western cafes, but hey, I'll prefer my pizza instead! On a side note, I liked the super refreshing salad that this dish's paired with, especially since the double pancakes can get a little too "gelat".
tender loving care
only available 11am-2.30pm on Weekends
Uniquely named breakfast sets make me very much tempted to order it, but anyways, I felt that this was a good choice! Not much choices for brunch like the other cafes out there, but well I was contented with their big breakfast. Loved those runny scrambled eggs on the yummy thick toast as well as the little hash brown stripes.
Heard their skinny wings and truffle fries taste awesome but we were too full to order many things for the day. Another savoury main dish recommendation would be their Fried Chicken with Waffles. Though I didn't order that but from reviews, I read that it's supposed to be one of their popular dishes so those going could give it a try.
As for myself, the next time round when I'm back just for tea time treats or dessert, I'll definitely go for their Waffles with homemade Ice-cream. Choose from interesting flavours such as Belgium Chocolate, Honey and Fig, Yuzu Sorbet etc. Gosh, saw the next table eating it and it looked really crispy fluffy, the way I like it done! I can only give my comments after trying it. Also note, food is subjective!

Overall, I enjoyed the short and sweet quality time spent. It's one of those places I mark as those you visit feeling a little hipster for the day (but no I'm not that much into hipster cafes). Since it's relatively new, it's not too crowded yet so it's good for meetups and even casual birthday celebrations.
Best part? It's one of the few cafes that are open on Mondays!
